Inspired by the Korean folklore of the siblings who became the sun and the moon, also known as Haennim Dalnim (해님 달님), "The Reason Sorghum Is Red."
The origins of our sun and moon are as varied as the cultures they originated from. In some they are star-crossed lovers, in others, like in the Korean folklore, they're siblings. This painting is a visual homage to this tale.
For those who don't know this story:
Long before the sky held a sun or a moon, two children waited for their mother beneath the mountains. She sold rice cakes in the village beyond the ridge, and each evening she made the long walk home alone.
One evening a tiger found her on the path. It took her shape, her voice, her basket, and came to the door asking to be let in.
The children fled. They climbed, and the tiger climbed after them, until they had nowhere left to go but up. They begged the sky for rescue, and a rope came down for them, gold and unbreaking, pulling them past the reach of the beast below.
In heaven the elder sibling was given the moon and the younger the sun, until the younger confessed a fear of the dark. So they traded light for light: one taking the cool silver of night, the other the gold too bright to look at directly.
